Most of us have probably heard of Simone Biles.
At the age of 27, she has accomplished more than most of us could ever hope to do.
The 2024 Olympics have been absolutely captivating, with Simone Biles continuing to inspire and amaze every time she takes the gymnastics floor.
This post, however, will shift its focus to something that holds greater significance than any of her accomplishments – her well-being.
Simone has been very transparent about her challenges, which is truly admirable. Discussing one’s personal struggles can be quite challenging. She discussed her own battles with ADHD, anxiety, panic attacks, and depression.
She also survived sexual abuse, a tragedy that will not be covered in this article, but please respect her transparency regarding this difficult subject.
Her bravery at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020
During the Olympics, Biles made the difficult decision to withdraw from multiple events, including the team final, citing mental health challenges. It undoubtedly required a great deal of bravery, as we are all aware that mental health issues are frequently met with harsh criticism and sarcastic remarks
Transparency and Healing
As previously stated, Biles openly shares her personal struggles, which deserves our respect and admiration. If we are being completely honest with ourselves, we all realise that this is not an easy task.
Following the Tokyo Olympics, she remains dedicated to raising awareness about mental health and emphasising the importance of seeking help when one feels overwhelmed by life’s challenges. And do, please. If it helps in any way, I personally encourage you as well.
The fact that you can never tell what people are going through behind closed doors is something that Biles has brought up on multiple occasions in interviews.
Exploring Simone Biles’ Approach to Overcoming Mental Health Challenges
Therapy can be incredibly beneficial
Biles openly discusses the benefits of therapy and how it positively impacted her journey. Being in therapy myself, I am now able to put all I have learnt into practice at home, something I was not able to do previously.
Therapy is truly amazing. Reaching out for help is a significant milestone, and you ought to enjoy a sense of pride in taking this important step. Progress can only be made when you overcome your limitations.
To find the sun, you must first leave the shadow.
Do what you need to do and don’t let anyone put you down for it
In 2020, Biles showed that her well-being is more important than others’ opinions or her goal for an Olympic medal.
I agree with that point of view. Due to my inability to give up, I burned out and became so miserable that I couldn’t make myself a cup of coffee for three months.
Recognising your limits and knowing when to stop pushing yourself is absolutely essential. People will always want more from you, but you have to put your own needs and value first.
At least moments like those will demonstrate who truly loves you and who only loves your success.
Active living and mindful techniques
Simone prioritises her mental health above all else. Take a moment to pause amidst the busyness of life. Slow down by practicing meditation or engaging in hobbies that bring you peace.
One way to find some relief is to spend quality time reading books you enjoy, allowing your body to take a break while giving your mind a gentle workout.
Embrace the boundaries of your capabilities
Biles’ courage to own her mistakes and realise that asking for help is a sign of bravery and strength is remarkable and inspiring. Despite the constant pressure she faces from others’ expectations, she remains resilient and sets a powerful example for us all.
We need to focus on shifting our mindset in that direction rather than blaming ourselves for things that are beyond our control.
